In the last Lesson task this week we were to design a book cover for ONE of the following:
- “Rosemary’s Baby” by Ira Levin: use complementary colours to express anguish and uncertainty.
- “Animal Farm” by George Orwell: use analogous colours with a contrasting accent to express disagreement and discontent.
- “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett: use secondary colours to express naivety, honesty and harmony.
- The book cover must contain the title and the author’s name.
- You must clearly make use of colour to express the desired effects.
I chose number 3, «The Secret Garden».
The first thing I did was to go online, to find some book covers that gave me inspiration and an idea of how I wanted it to look. I then made a moodboard:

To get more inspiration on how I wanted the colors and have an idea on which colors to use I went to Adobe colours.
Since I were to use secondary colors, I made this color theme and added it to my library. It contains secondary colors:

I also went to the explore page in Adobe color and search for secondary colors and added them to my library:

I then looked more through the explore page and searched for naivety, honesty and harmony which is what I am to express in the book cover through the colors I am using:

I now visualized how I wanted the book cover and I drew a sketch:

I wanted the two trees on the side and have the «garden» in the middle and the title on top.
I started to play around in photoshop and added the colors I had in my library, which I had found in Adobe colors.
I found a background color I wanted to use and added two trees:
I then added more details, using colors from my library:

I then made the title and the authors name in Indesign, again using the colors from my library. The green, a secondary color, is clearly used and shown i the image, there is some orange and shades of purple/pink in the image. I think the colors in the image presents harmony, honesty and naivety.
Here is the finished book cover:
